When Do Whiskered Terns Nest on Skadar Lake?

6 min read

Whiskered terns nest on the floating vegetation of Skadar Lake in late spring and summer. May and June are the months to plan for, and park staff were still monitoring colonies in June and July 2024. October is the wrong month for them.

When are they easiest to see?

May and June, from a boat on the northern shallows. Our birdwatching calendar marks the whiskered tern as the bird of those two months: colonies on the floating mats on calm May mornings, and birds feeding over open water in June.

That lines up with the park's own check. In its 2025 report to the Bern Convention, the Government of Montenegro said the national park's expert service monitored this tern in June and July 2024. The population was stable. Some colonies had fewer nests than in 2023, which the report connects to boats breaking waterways through the vegetation the birds use for nesting.

The report's English text calls the bird a white-bearded tern and spells the Latin name Chilidonias hybrida. The usual name is whiskered tern, Chlidonias hybrida. BirdLife lists it among the key species of the lake, with the Dalmatian pelican.

Where do they nest?

On floating mats, not in trees and not on the stone bridge. The same government report describes the lake's carpets of white water lily and water chestnut as a special habitat, and says any reduction of that habitat is prohibited. Water chestnut is the plant people here call kasaronja. The lily guide separates those plants from the white flowers, which are a late May to mid-July event on our route.

The nests are in that cover. You see the birds from the open water next to it, hunting low over the surface, or as a scatter of pale birds farther out in June. You do not need to reach a nest to know what you are looking at: a small tern, dark cap, white cheek, red bill in breeding plumage, working the same patch of water again and again.

Can the boat go into the colony?

No. The 2024 monitoring tied fewer nests in some colonies to waterways cut through the nesting vegetation. We stay in the open water beside the mats. We do not push the boat into the beds. That is the same rule we use for the lilies, and it is the one that matters for these birds.

A tern colony is not a stop on the trip. If the birds are up and calling, the useful thing is to sit still and watch them feed. Chasing a dive scatters them. Early morning is the calmer hour on this water. Nothing in that is a promise for a given day. Wind, water level, and where the fish are all move the birds.

Will you see them in October?

Do not come in October for whiskered terns. They are not on our October list. That month belongs to Dalmatian pelicans, glossy ibis on passage, and the first winter ducks. Skadar Lake in October is the account of what the boat still shows then, and the pelican guide is where those other birds sit on the route.

If you are planning a later spring, book the tern months on purpose. May and June, morning departure, and say you want time beside the mats rather than a fast loop.

Which tour runs beside that water?

The Amazon Tour does. It is one hour and €85 for the private boat. Open Lake plus the Amazon channels is €95 and about one hour and twenty minutes. The Complete Tour is €120 and about one hour and forty minutes, and it adds the canyon and Karuč. The half-hour Canyon Tour stays in the river canyon. The open-lake hour can still show a tern hunting over open water in June, and it does not put you beside the nesting cover.

Every price is for the whole boat, up to eight guests, from the old stone bridge in Rijeka Crnojevića. Parking there is free. The national park ticket is separate: €5 for an adult, free for children under 15. The cost guide is the full breakdown. Best Skadar Lake Tours compares the lengths without the bird calendar.

If the terns are the reason for the trip, come in May or June and take a route that stays beside the mats. Check Skadar Lake Live on the morning you drive down. Reserve from the booking section, or on WhatsApp at +382 67 564 578. You pay on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this topic.

Is the white-bearded tern a different bird?

No. Montenegro's 2025 Bern Convention report uses white-bearded tern and the spelling Chilidonias hybrida for the bird usually called the whiskered tern, Chlidonias hybrida.

Do you guarantee a whiskered tern on the Amazon Tour?

No. May and June are the months they use the floating mats, and June and July 2024 monitoring still found colonies, but a single morning can be quiet. We will not drive into a colony to produce a sighting.
